Mr. William Breer is a Senior Adviser to the Japan Chair at
CSIS. He retired recently as the CSIS
Japan Chair after serving
since October 1996. Prior to joining CSIS, he was a senior
adviser at the
Policy Planning Staff of the Department of State
(1993-1996). Breer devoted the major portion of
his career
to the management of U.S.-Japan relations. He spent 18 years
in Japan, serving at the
U.S. embassy as political officer,
political counselor, and deputy chief of mission with Ambassadors
Michael Armacost and Walter Mondale. In Washington, Breer served
as country director for Japan,
the most senior position dealing
exclusively with U.S.-Japan relations, and as director for
Northeast
Asia in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research.
Ambassador William Clark, Jr. is Managing Director of Hills & Company.
Previously he was
President of the Japan Society, Inc. He has
held many senior positions in the Department of State,
including
Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs,
Ambassador to India,
Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of
State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, and Deputy Chief
Mission at the U.S. Embassy, Tokyo. He also held the Japan
Chair at CSIS. Ambassador Clark has
received numerous awards,
including the Order of the Sacred Treasure Gold and Silver
Star, conferred
by the Emperor of Japan (2000), and the Department
of State Distinguished Honor Award (1989).
Ambassador Rust M. Deming is currently an Adjunct Professor
at the School for Advanced
International Studies (SAIS).Amb.
Deming served as American Ambassador to Tunisia from
January
2001 until September 2003. Prior to that, he served Principal
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for
East Asian and Pacific
Affairs (June 1998 to August 2000). Amb. Deming has spent much
of his career
dealing with Japanese affairs, having served
in Japan as Charge d'Affaires, ad interim, from December
1996
to September 1997 and as Deputy Chief of Mission under Ambassador
Walter Mondale from
October 1993 to December 1996. From September
1991 to August 1993, Amb. Deming was Director
of the Office
of Japanese Affairs in Washington. He served as Minister Counselor
for Political Affairs at
the American Embassy in Tokyo from
August 1987 to July 1991. |
