- "Nine
Asian Nations Call for Suu Kyi's Release," WP6/17/03,
A13. ASEAN Foreign Ministers urged their Burmese counterpart,
Win Aung, to release Suu Kyi, the first such rebuke of
its own members. ASEAN Secretary General Ong Keng Yong
said, "We had a good exchange of views on Myanmar and
[the ministers] conveyed the request…to the Myanmar government
that they would like to see an easing of tensions and
early release of Aung San Suu Kyi." http://www.aseansec.org/14876.htm

- "U.S.
Steps Up Pressure On Burmese Junta; Congress Moves Towards
Import Ban; Powell Condemns Repression," NYT6/13/03,
A16. In a statement released on 6/12, Secretary of State
Powell said, "It is time to reassess our policy toward
a military dictatorship that has repeatedly attacked democracy
and jailed its heroes." Sanctions being debated by Congress
would bar imports from Burma, worth $356 million last
year, freeze the government's assets in the United States,
widen a ban on visas for its leaders and block aid from
international lenders. http://www.state.gov/secretary/rm/2003/21466.htm
- "It's
Time to Turn the Tables on Burma's Thugs,"Op Ed By
Colin L. Powell (Sec of State), WSJ 6/12/03. "By attacking
Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters, the Burmese junta
has finally and definitively rejected the efforts of the
outside world to bring Burma back into the international
community. Indeed, their refusal of the work of Ambassador
Razali and of the rights of Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters
could not be clearer. Our response must be equally clear
if the thugs who now rule Burma are to understand that
their failure to restore democracy will only bring more
and more pressure against them and their supporters. http://lists.state.gov/SCRIPTS/WA-USIAINFO.EXE?A2=ind0306b&L=WF-EASIA&P=R10709
